Computer
Science is the systematic study of computing systems and computation. It
entails the theoretical study of computation and algorithmic reasoning. The body
of knowledge resulting from this discipline contains theories for understanding
computing systems and methods; design methodology, algorithms, and tools;
methods for the testing of concepts; methods of analysis and verification; and
knowledge representation and implementation. It stems as an engineering science
that rivets the study of computable processes and structures with the aid of
computers. It engrosses the study
of the theoretical foundations of information,
computation and
their implementation and application in computer
systems. Computer science has many sub-fields; some emphasize the computation of
specific results (such as computer
graphics), while others (such as computational complexity theory) relate to
properties of computational problems.
There has been much cross-fertilization of ideas
between the various computer-related disciplines proving it to be a diversified
and wide ranged field. With
the advent of the World Wide Web, the field of computers has extended its locale
from Software development to many other disciplines including
artificial intelligence, cognitive
science, physics
,quantum computing),
and linguistics.
Different identified fields for Computer Science are:
mathematical logic, Network designing, graph theory, type theory, cryptography,
computational theory, analysis of alogorithms, data structures, programming
languages, data mining, ditributed and parallel computing, Computer
Architecture, software engineering, artificial intelligence, image processing,
human computer intercation, bio informatics and many more.
B.Sc
Computer Science at NFC IEFR:
The
Computer Science department at NFC IEFR is closely integrated and incorporated
with Electrical Engineering. It exploits both the human technical and hardware
facilities and amenities hold by the Department of Electrical Engineering. The
basic endeavor is to make the students conversant with the computer hardware
& software and to train the students to apply this knowledge in business and
industry. The four year degree program in B.Sc (Hons.) Computer Science is
affiliated with University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore.
The
primary goal is to educate the students with a wide-ranging and in-depth
knowledge of computing systems, and to develop professionals in this field. The
technologies we teach are the ones on which our twenty-first century world
relies: communications, computers and networks, electronics, nanosystems, and
power generation.
The
course objectives are formulated as:
To
provide the necessary foundation in the principles and methods of computer
science & electronics engineering while preparing students for a broad range
of responsible technical positions in the industry and/or advanced graduate
education.
To
offer students the opportunity to deepen their technical understanding in a
particular subject area by a program of related technical electives, or to
obtain a broader education in mathematics, science, electronics
engineering, software engineering, hardware engineering, networking, artificial
intelligence and expert systems by a flexible choice of technical and free
electives.
Curriculum
of B.Sc Computer Science:
Computer
Science Curriculum is allied to the application of computers to a wide range of
problems. It aids to provide a solid technical foundation that prepares students
for a career that can adapt to rapidly changing technology in computer science
and Telecom engineering. The degree program is
distinctive, stimulating and challenging as it is perfect blend of electronics,
computers, and more orientation towards electrical engineering enabling our
students to experience a degree of
specialization which facilitates greater penetration of the disciplines.
The
course aims to provide an understanding of how software and hardware technology
can be harnessed to help with solving problems. Topics include the structure and
organization of computer systems, the theory of computing, and the design,
development, verification, and maintenance of computer software. The course
introduces examples that are drawn from a wide range of applications. No
previous experience of computing or computer programming is assumed for this
course. The curriculum mainly addresses the built in close liaison of electrical
engineering with computer science.
Laboratories
at NFC IEFR:
The
B.Sc Computer Science degree at NFC IEFR makes the most use of state of the art,
furnished and studded with incessant supply of up to the mark laboratory
equipment electrical engineering labs. They include Computer lab, I.T. lab, Electrical
Technology Lab, Digital Systems Lab, , Analog
Electronics Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Simulation Lab, Communication Systems Lab
& Power Electronics Lab.
The
computers in the institute are linked with the LAN environment providing full
time internet access to the students and faculty members.
IT/Computer
Facilities:
The
main computing resource provided for student use is a network of powerful
Pentium IV PCs being interconnected through local area network also including
laser printing facility. A ample range of softwares is available on the
computers, including all the popular word-processing, spreadsheet and database
packages. 24 hours internet access is possible on high speed DSL connection with
256 (kbps).
Career
Choices & Job prospects for Computer Science graduates:
Computers
are being used in various areas going very deep into human lives and unlocks
numerous doors of opportunity. The demand for people who are skilled in the
computing field is huge and is expected to continue to increase as the field’s
rapid augmentation persists. The corroboration of the above mentioned fact is
the most recent development of Software Tech Park in Lahore which validates the
expected increase in jobs in this ever evolving and sprouting field of I.T. to
be 100,000. This project is probable to attract foreign investments to kick
start economic and technological escalation of the country through its modern
and high tech infrastructure. The indispensable idea behind the project is to
have all IT and IT enabled services under one roof.
The world class layout, system architecture, planning, designing and
development will reflect the up-to-the-minute trends in IT field. The
STP(software technology park) will be equipped with state of the art facilities
like wireless LAN/ WAN,VSAT, video conferencing, disaster recovery sites, R&D
labs, Tele-Medicine, IT incubation center, training institutes, IT University
and a global data center. The B.Sc Computer Science Program at NFC IEFR will
certainly assist the induction of skilled
and highly professional software engineers.
Computers
are found in all areas of society, including manufacturing, finance, insurance,
real estate, wholesale and retail trade, government, consulting, entertainment,
and academia. Hardware and software vendors hire computer professionals in areas
such as product development, quality assurance, customer support, sales and
marketing, documentation, and training. Organizations that use these products
(such as hospitals, banks, insurance companies, and manufacturing companies), or
the “end users,” hire computer professionals as systems programmers,
applications programmers, systems analysts, database administrators, and network
administrators, as well as for other types of positions. Most large companies
have internal computing departments that develop custom products for use by
other “end-user” departments within the same company.
